In Search of Forlorn Hope; A Comprehensive Guide to Locating British Regiments and Their Records (1640 to World War I).
The main key to military research is to know what regiment an ancestor served in. All military records are held by the regimental name (or number). An index has been compiled of battles, skirmishes, detachments, posts, etc. around the world and the regiments stationed there. If your ancestor lived at a known military barracks or garrison site, or was born there, then it is probable that either he or his father was in the military. Knowing what regiment was stationed there at a specific time period narrows down the search through the enormous collection of military records. The two main volumes also include the following: How to find regimental names/numbers; military records of genealogical value; extensive bibliography to footnoted locations; double index by dates and by locations; and typical research problems and solutions. These two hardcover library grade volumes, each 830 pages with dust jackets.
The third volume contains War Office records on microfilm through the LDS Family History Centers; list of garrisons, barracks, etc.; list of colonels of regiments, 1600-1881; and a genealogical table for each regiments history. This softcover volume, 280 pages, is included with the set. . See the to place an order.
